What is a pool umbrella sleeve?
A pool umbrella sleeve is a socket permanently embedded into a Baja shelf, tanning ledge, pool deck, patio, or hardscape. It creates the below-surface mounting point for an umbrella pole or adapter.
Most residential pools are built with a relatively small plastic umbrella sleeve. Once the surrounding pool finish is completed, very little of that sleeve remains visible. Usually you see only the opening, trim ring, or removable cap.
The sleeve may be small, but it determines the original mounting location, usable depth, pole diameter, alignment, and connection available to everything installed above it.
Existing Pools
You usually do not need to tear out a usable plastic sleeve.
Many Baja shelves already have a builder-installed plastic sleeve in exactly the location where the homeowner wants shade. The problem is often not the location—it is the small diameter and limited height of the original mounting point.
Existing Foundation
Keep the sleeve when it is still structurally usable.
A BajaMate Anchor is designed to insert into a compatible builder-installed plastic sleeve and create the larger mounting point above it. The original sleeve stays embedded in the pool.
Existing Sleeve
The original plastic sleeve remains permanently embedded below the pool or deck surface.

What about a submerged Baja shelf?
For full-time in-pool use, BajaMate uses 316 stainless steel. The material is intended for the demanding combination of water, chemicals, sunlight, and repeated outdoor exposure found around swimming pools.
Measure Before Ordering
How to inspect and measure an existing pool umbrella sleeve.
Start by removing the cap and inspecting the actual opening. Do not measure the decorative ring or outside edge. What matters is the usable inside diameter and depth.
Sleeve Compatibility
A small sleeve does not necessarily mean a small umbrella.
The plastic sleeve stays below the surface. The BajaMate Anchor inserts into it. The larger umbrella mounts into the Anchor above.
This is fundamentally different from trying to force a large umbrella pole directly into the existing plastic sleeve. The Anchor creates a separate, larger mounting point above the pool surface while using the embedded sleeve as the connection below.
What umbrella pole size does BajaMate support?
Compatible BajaMate Anchor configurations support round, straight center-pole umbrellas up to 2.00 inches outside diameter maximum. Reducer rings help center several common smaller pole sizes.
Remodel & Replacement
Replace the original sleeve when the foundation itself is the problem.
Adapting an existing sleeve works when that sleeve remains structurally usable. An Anchor should not be expected to repair a cracked, crushed, loose, severely misaligned, or otherwise compromised socket below the finished surface.
Foundation Upgrade
Remodels create the opportunity to start with steel.
When the surrounding pool finish is already being opened, a damaged or limiting plastic sleeve can be replaced with a BajaMate metal Foundation before the surface is restored.

No. Pool umbrella sleeves vary by manufacturer, builder, age, material, usable inside diameter, and depth. Measure the actual sleeve rather than assuming that two similar-looking openings are identical.
Can I use my existing plastic pool sleeve?
Often, yes. If the existing builder-installed sleeve remains structurally usable and is compatible with the BajaMate system, the sleeve can stay in place and accept a BajaMate Anchor adapter.
Does the stainless Foundation sleeve slide into my plastic sleeve?
No. The BajaMate metal Foundation sleeve is a replacement or new-construction foundation. The BajaMate Anchor is the component designed to insert into a compatible existing plastic sleeve.
What material should I use inside the pool?
BajaMate uses 316 stainless steel for Foundation sleeves intended for full-time submerged pool use. Aluminum is intended primarily for decks, patios, hardscape, landscape, and temporary splash-zone exposure.
How do I measure my existing sleeve?
Remove the cap and measure the usable inside diameter and usable internal depth. For an in-pool application, also measure the water depth at the sleeve location and the outside diameter of the intended umbrella pole.
What size umbrella pole does the BajaMate Anchor support?

When should a plastic pool sleeve be replaced?
Replacement should be considered when the sleeve is cracked, crushed, loose, deteriorated, severely misaligned, or otherwise unable to provide a dependable embedded connection. Pool remodels and new construction also provide a natural opportunity to install a metal Foundation sleeve.
Can a pool umbrella sleeve be installed in concrete?
Yes. Pool and deck umbrella sleeves can be embedded into concrete and other hardscape systems. Position, alignment, sleeve material, intended Anchor, umbrella clearance, and surrounding finish should be planned before the concrete is completed.
